Alex and Graham

[three_fifth] [dropcap color=”rosy”]M[/dropcap]y fiancé and I had been dating for 8 years when he proposed in the most romantic and special way. We had planned a trip to Ramsgate to get away from our very stressful and busy jobs in Joburg, and to celebrate our 8-year anniversary, and went down for a week of complete relaxation and indulgence. I had helped plan the trip and had no idea that he was making his own special plans.

We had spent two glorious days and nights in Ramsgate, relaxing in the sun on the beach and were feeling quite relaxed by that stage. On the third morning he woke me up at 5am and said that he wanted to go and watch the sunrise. Using this holiday as an opportunity to catch up on sleep, I told him that he was crazy and that he was welcome to go alone while I went back to sleep, but he insisted that we never have this opportunity living in a land-locked city and so I reluctantly accepted. I thought it was strange that he was wide awake at this time as he always sleeps through his alarm at home but put it down to the fresh sea air and holiday mood. I threw on some clothes but was too lazy to put any make-up on or even brush my hair! We walked down to the beach, which was right outside the gate where we stayed, and sat on a little bench and watched the sunrise. A few moments later, as the sun appeared through the clouds, he said that he had something to ask me. Being half asleep I still didn’t catch onto what was happening. When I agreed, he said that it was something very important and that made my heart stop with realisation. The next minute he was kneeling in front of me on the sand with a beautiful ring, asking me to be his wife. I was so shocked and surprised that I couldn’t speak. I had to restrain myself from bursting into tears (of joy) and after a long silence said yes! It was only then that I noticed how terribly nervous he was. His hands we shaking and he was very pale; some serious symptoms that I hadn’t noticed on our walk to the beach.
