Melissa and Darren

Melissa and Darren

[three_fifth] [dropcap color=”rosy”]L[/dropcap]et me start by saying that this was probably the most nerve wrecking experience of my life-from asking her parents for their blessing, to asking her to marry me. Looking back now I know it was the best decision I have ever made.

I received a prize to spend a weekend at Kuzuko Lodge in the Eastern Cape for 2 people. (http://www.kuzukolodge.co.za/). I was fortunate enough to go there prior to getting the prize and was very impressed with the venue and setting. I decided then that this is the place I want to ask Mel to marry me and would do everything in my power to make it possible.

So in July I made the booking and didn’t tell her, every time she asked me when we were going, I’d always say it is fully booked or make up some other excuse. Eventually I told her that we were going on the 24th August 2012. The day came and I had already contacted Kuzuko Lodge the Monday telling them I’m going to propose on Saturday 25th and that they must please arrange something for me. Thursday night Mel offered to pack my bag for me to which I responded “No, I’ll do it on Friday as I’m on leave.” This was a change as normally she packs when we go away, but fortunately she didn’t click. We arrived at Kuzuko Lodge, checked into our suite, which was beautiful, and started unpacking. It was approximately 6pm and supper was at 8. We unpacked, relaxed a bit and then proceeded upstairs for supper. At this stage I had taken the box with the ring and put it into my pocket, fortunately she didn’t notice the ring box. That night before we sat down to eat, I said I’m going to the bathroom and instead slipped into the manager’s office and said there is a change in plans I need to do this tonight. So while we were upstairs having supper etc., the staff went down to the room and started setting everything up for me. They placed rose petals in the shape of a heart on the bed, and a trail of candles and more rose petals leading to a Champagne bottle with 2 glasses. The entire bedroom and bathroom was done up with candles, as well as the bath filled with water and rose petals. It was so beautiful.

After supper we went back to the room. I asked Mel to open the door as my hands were full. She opened the door and saw the room done up, she thought that it was something that Kuzuko Lodge does for couples, when she turned to close the door I went on one knee next to the bed, but she took so long to turn around that I had to change knees. She turned around and I proposed, she then got teary eyed. She eventually said yes and now we planning our wedding.
