Natalie and Ruan
Natalie & Ruan[three_fifth] [dropcap color=”rosy”]I[/dropcap]f ever there was a fairytale romance, I’m living it! We have been dating for almost five years, and know each other from high school, yet were in no hurry to get engaged despite all our families and friends pressing on the matter.
Ruan and I won a romantic 4 night stay at a honeymoon lodge in Sedgefield, in the Garden Route. We got a lot of resistance from our jobs with regard to getting leave, but I had never been to the coast. We would also fly down to George which would be another first for me and everyone I spoke to told me how beautiful the Garden Route was.
After considering all the pro’s and con’s about going, we decided to go! I was so nervous and excited about all of the things I would experience. First experiences had become an important part of our relationship as we devoted time and effort to keep things interesting! We enjoyed perfect weather, ate oysters and crayfish for the first time and enjoyed being in each other’s company and being away from the Gauteng buzz! We took long winding roads and got to explore Mosselbay, Hartenbos, George, Sedgefield, Knysna, Buffels Bay and Plettenberg Bay.
I was in awe, as excited as a little girl and Ruan even dubbed me ‘Dora the Explorer’ as I was filled with amazement and curiosity with each new thing he would show me! On Thursday we hit the road to Plettenberg Bay. We enjoyed a stroll on the beach, having lunch at Moby Dick’s and soaking up the sun. We eventually went for a swim (I was scared to death of the ocean and was a bit reluctant at first) but Ruan reassured me that everything would be okay as long as I stuck with him.
At one point a huge wave hit me and as I came up to see where he was I turned around and saw him on one knee in the ocean. I thought that he got hit by the wave as well, but he didn’t get up. He took my hand and told me: “My skat, we are standing (he was kneeling!haha) in the rough mercyless ocean, which is filled with mistery and to which the end is unknown, of which you were very afraid and we braved it together. That is symbolic to life and our path together as our future was also not known, but as long as we have each other we could face it together and nothing could come our way that we couldn’t overcome. Would you be willing to brave it with me?” I couldn’t say anything and was so shocked! It was so unexpected and so special! He put the ring in a shell we had picked up while walking on the beach on Wednesday. Needless to say I was so overcome with joy that I totally forgot about my fear for the waves and the ocean, but I also knew that I needn’t be worried. I would have the most incredible man be by my side for the rest of our lives. It was so special how he took something I was so afraid of and turned it around, so that everytime I think of the sea, I will only have happy thoughts and memories.
Afterwards we had champagne and strawberries and got to enjoy the sunset..
