Chongwe Camp is situated on one of the most beautiful locations in Africa – the banks of the Lower Zambezi River, Zambia. The legendary Zambezi River in it’s self is a spectacle, with its numerous island, lagoons and floodplains which attract most of the wildlife in this pristine area.
Directly opposite the famous Mana Pools, Chongwe Camp enjoys both a spectacular view of the river and the Zambian Escarpment beyond. The Chongwe River itself forms the boundary of the Lower Zambezi National Park, one of Zambia’s premier National Parks. The picturesque scenery of beautiful winterthorn groves, tall leadwoods, ebonies and figs stand on a carpet of rich grassland coupled with the prolific game makes this area one of “Africa’s real gems”.
The Lower Zambezi is notable for its elephants, grand old bulls and huge matriarch herds are ever present. The hippos are plentiful, gathering in great ‘rafts’; buffalo graze on islands, often swimming between them, while impala are everywhere and kudu, waterbuck, bushbuck and zebra are common. Leopard, wild dog and spotted hyena are the major predators, with some unusually large prides of lion. The bird life along the riverbanks is rich with over 370 species have been recorded here. Magnificent fish eagles can be seen and heard for miles around and nesting along the cliffs are white fronted and carmine beeaters.
