The Cairn of Old Kilgobbin Wedding Venue – The name “the Cairn” was inspired by the fact that Old Kilgobbin is an Irish settler farm and in Ireland cairns are built to commemorate important events, and also placed as route markers on journeys and what more momentous an event do we experience in our lives than a wedding, and the journey that follows is the most important any of us will undertake.
So the Cairn seemed a fitting name for this lovely space. My dream is to host unique weddings, all the while being aware of the environment beyond its walls that is diverse, ecologically sensitive and precious to the community that we live amongst. We limit functions to daylight hours so that our guests can see the landscapes surrounding us, take a picnic blanket and a glass of wine and sandwich themselves between a Dargle sky and a slice of rolling lawn, hang over a wooden fence and have a conversation with one of our magnificent Friesian horses, and as the last guests drive sedately down the hillside towards home ( or the young ones go off to Notties Pub or Il Postino for the after party!), our resident owls can glide across a quiet farm and the tree dassies can wake up and arouse the rest of the forest night life.
The Cairn of Old Kilgobbin Weddings
So if you are looking for an intimate, relaxed wedding in a beautifully kept old farmyard, with delicious, satisfying local food cooked with passion and served with care, on old antique plates or enamelware, and all tinged with warm afternoon Dargle sunlight, then the Cairn is exactly what you need. Our tables are long rectangles of wood and wrought iron, seldom needing more than a dusting of lace or a precious antique vase to add to the occasion, our comfortable chairs are of wood slates and wrought iron (tried and tested by burly farmers and given the stamp of approval). Our crockery is an assortment of family heirlooms, flea market vintage sales and many hours of searching auction websites, from Royal Albert to Huguenot ceramics and green and cream enamelware from the local Indian trading store. Old oregan and yellowwood dressers serve as backdrops as well as housing all the linens, antique vases and collectibles that are yours to choose from for your décor. And we do all the work for you so that you have the time to focus on your family and friends and be a guest at your own wedding.
The Cairn can comfortably seat 100 people, can cope with another ten, but more than 120 becomes a tight squeeze reminiscent of last year\’s jeans, not what one wants to spend the afternoon in!
