Clare & Andrew[dropcap color=”rosy”]A[/dropcap]ndrew and I have grown up knowing each other since we were about 5 years old. Our families go to church together and we have been on many family holidays together. We were also in the same circle of friends at varsity. He apparently liked me for ages and finally I saw the light and we started dating about 3 years ago.
On the 1st of May 2012 (after we’d been dating for just under 2.5 years), Andrew picked me up at my house and said he had a day out planned for me. He took me to Franschhoek where he had organized a full body massage at a luxury spa for me! I had never gone to a spa for something like that before – it was amazing! He sat in the car and read a book while he waited for me – so sweet. I was wondering if this could be it, but we have often taken turns to plan fun days out for each other so I wasn’t sure.
We then had a light lunch in Franschhoek and drove back to Cape Town. He was beginning to act a little strangely and kept looking at his watch. We drove to Hout Bay and then over Chapman’s peak. I love Cape Town and spending time in all the beautiful scenery we have around us. We had gone on our 1 month-anniversary date to Chapman’s Peak back when we had started dating and gone there many times since for a picnic or to watch the sunset. I thought he was going to stop somewhere along there, but we kept driving and then I began thinking that we might be going to Misty Cliffs which is a little village on the coast between Kommetjie and Scarborough. Andrew’s grandparents own a little cottage right on the rocks at Misty Cliffs. We have had many wonderful family holidays and special moments there, including Andrew and my first kiss on New Year’s eve, a week after we’d started dating!
Andrew drove down the drive way and asked me to go and wait at the door to the cottage for him, he would drive further down the driveway and park the car. By now I was pretty sure what was coming, and I was feeling so relaxed and excited. He then called to me from round the house and said that I could go into the house and he’d join me in a minute. The house is open-plan all the way through to the front room, which has sliding glass doors which look out onto the rocks just below and the sea is right behind the rocks. I opened the door and there was a pathway of tea light candles and vases of red roses all the way through to the front room. I was just overwhelmed. It looked so beautiful! I slowly walked through and got to the glass doors which were open. I looked out and below me on the rocks was Andrew standing behind a microphone and picking up his guitar. Behind him on the rocks was his brother seated at a drum kit and two other friends with an electric guitar and a bass guitar. Everything was hooked up to amps and speakers. It was incredible. Never in a million years could I have expected something like this! They started playing and Andrew played his guitar and sang ‘Yellow’ by Coldplay. He has an amazing voice but doesn’t often sing. It was so special to hear him singing directly to and for me. I didn’t cry, I just couldn’t stop smiling!
When they had finished the guys packed up their things and left while Andrew and I went down onto the rocks with some champagne. By this time it was sunset. He got down on one knee, pulled out a ring box, said some lovely things about me and asked me to marry him! I said yes even before he’d opened the ring box. I was just thrilled! He had used a diamond from my side of the family which my parents had given to him – it comes from my great-grandmother’s engagement ring. My ring is beautiful and I still love looking at it every day!
The evening wasn’t over yet – Andrew took me out for supper at The Greenhouse- award winning restaurant at The Cellars-Hohenhort! Wow, I was spoilt that day. Andrew blessed me and showed his love for me in such a romantic and beautiful way. He incorporated all the things I love best.
I counted up the red roses afterwards and there were 160 in total!! I will never forget the feeling of walking through that house and seeing him on rocks below about to sing to me! I am marrying my best friend and I couldn’t be happier!
