Claudia & David[dropcap color=”rosy”]I[/dropcap]t was Friday afternoon, December 14th2012. My boyfriend David had told me that he has finally given in to my nagging about us going out on a date night and that he was going to take us out for dinner. He said that there was going to be a band and that it was a good half an hour drive, the minute he said that I was convinced that we were finally going to Kirstenbosch’s Carols by candlelight which he promised me we would go to this year – which happened to be on that weekend.
David wouldn’t tell me where we were going but I was completely convinced that we were going to Kirstenbosch. I was so excited! We got home from work and David started to iron a shirt, I thought it was a bit much, so I asked if I needed to wear heels to which he responded ‘Yes’.
Then it hit me, we weren’t going to Kirstenbosh after all. I still had no inkling what was actually set to go down that evening. I decided to get all dolled up, new outfit and all. Soon we were driving on the N1 towards Paarl, and we started approaching the ‘Vrede en Lust Estate’ sign. I blurted out “I’ve always wanted to go there” to which Dave responded “So have I, and they have a gourmet braai evening tonight which is why I picked it” I was over the moon, even with the sign in front of me I didn’t think we would be going there for dinner.
It was the most perfect evening, not a breathe of wind and the weather was absolutely gorgeous! There were only 3 other tables outside that evening and as the sun began to set the two men band started to play. I absolutely adore live music and the ladies voice mixed with the mellow guitarist was so soothing. As the sun set, fairy lights and solar panel lanterns were charged on to make the most beautiful setting. The food and wine was to die for, and so was wine bottle number two!
Hearing the birds chirp all around us, I took a big sigh and said “Oh I wish we could stay here tonight” to which Dave responded “wouldn’t that be amazing”. We finished our dessert and I popped down to loo and to check out what the delicious deli had in store.
When I got back, I went to sit on David’s lap and somehow the conversation got to “In ten years’ time…” and I jokingly said “Maybe in ten years’ time, Storm -our husky who has managed to dig up our entire irrigation system would have dug a big enough hole for us to make a swimming pool” “In ten years’ time I’d probably still be waiting for my ring” and giggled. David responded “Why don’t we change that? and I still, completely oblivious to what he was hinting at, thought David meant we could get a swimming pool!
Then he reached for his pocket and my heart felt like it was about to break through my chest. David pulled out a gorgeous little black box with croc skin texture and gold finishes. I was in total shock and jokingly said, “Please say that’s not a pair of earrings” and when he opened the box I saw the most beautiful, amazingly perfect ring I have ever seen in my entire life! My heart stopped as he said “Will you marry me” Tears streamed down my face and David began to cry as well.
Our waiter came to our table with a bottle of proper French champagne, and that is when I realised I hadn’t said yes yet! Still sitting on David’s lap I said “Yes yes, of course yes” We kissed and I felt like a nervous teenager, like I was kissing someone for the first time. The butterflies in my tummy were going mad. David then told me that we were staying the night.
We took the champagne to our beautiful cottage which was strewn with rose petals. It turns out that David had packed our bags the day before and my mom had gone to Vrede en Lust to drop off our things.
The word ‘LOVE’ was inscribed in a heart of rose petals on a bed side table. The evening ended off with a huge bubble bath filled with rose petals accompanied with the French champagne on the side.
The next morning we had the most delicious breakfast ever, I couldn’t stop staring at my amazing ring… which, I might add David designed himself and was made from scratch so it’s one of a kind – talk about being a lucky gal! All the staff wished us (of course they were all in on it except for me) and we got a complimentary bottle of wine from the estate. After breakfast David said he had another surprise for me.
We climbed in the car and five minutes later we rocked up outside horse stables, we were going to go horseback riding and wine tasting – David knew that horseback riding was on my bucket list so I was ecstatic to say the least!
The weather was perfect once again. I felt like I was in a dream world. I couldn’t believe that I was actually a fiancé.
We went on a two hour long horseback ride through the most beautiful vineyards of grapes and different fruits until we got to the Allée Bleue Estate for wine tasting. Of course the wine was the most amazing wine I had ever tried!
When we got back to the stables David said that we had run a little late for our next ‘appointment’ but that he had forgotten something very important at home so we had to pop back quickly
When we got to our home, I opened the front door and was welcomed with a huge ‘SURPRISE!!” David had organised that all of our family be at our home to congratulate us. I was completely overwhelmed and burst into tears…again!
Our house was decorated with “Happy Engagement’ banners, a spread of delicious platters were on the tables and my mother had made a gorgeous Engagement cake! My father said a heart wrenching speech which had me crying for the umpteenth time.
David’s mother who is a spectacular musician played a rendition of “My heart will go on” on her cello for us. Having both of our families come together and be present for such a special and momentous time in our lives was just the icing on the cake. It truly was the most perfect beginning to our ‘Happily Ever After’
