Jamie & Rolf

Jamie & Rolf

[dropcap color=”rosy”]O[/dropcap]n a cold easter weekend this year, we ventured to Hermanus with my whole family. My boyfriend (now fiancé) told me he had a surprise for me, when I questioned why, he said I deserve all the spoils in the world.

In keeping this a surprise for weeks, finally when we were on our way to Gansbaai I realized we were going shark cage diving, which has been my extreme adventure dream, making the top of my bucket list. I was ecstatic, cold and nervous all rolled into one. Rolf hated sharks, as he is an avid kite surfer, and when I heard he was joining I knew it was true love. Rolf always said how IF he ever proposed he would make sure the girl has no idea a ring is coming. And in keeping to that statement he held out with the proposal- which I had NO idea was coming. If ever I thought the man of my dreams would propose, I thought it would be in a cage whilst swimming with sharks, but Rolf knew this and caught me by surprise with what followed. Once the amazing shark cage diving experience was completed, Rolf said he had booked us dinner at Birkenhead (being a beautiful boutique hotel on the cliffs overlooking the ocean). When I asked again why I am being so spoilt, he had a glow in his eyes. Let I might mention that the morning before this experience, he “meet a friend for coffee”, and when he arrived home with goggle marks on his forehead I questioned the truth of that statement. On arrival at the hotel and being showered with sparkling wine and a romantic atmosphere, we were seated at our exclusive table. As we finished our main meal, Rolf wanted to go take a look around the Boutique hotel (which only has 10 bedrooms). I stepped outside where cascading swimming pools flowed through the middle of the hotel. It was drizzling, and the pools were lit up. Something caught my eye, and as I looked into the bottom of the pool it said “Jamie will you marry me”. When I turned back crying I saw Rolf down on one knee. I said YES immediately. Holding a ring designed ALL by himself with no input from me., he had gone all out this time. He had spent two hours placing each individual black stone at the bottom of the pool, in freezing cold water. He was too cold to put the question mark. He had sold his dream S worx mountain bike for the ring, and I couldn’t be more blessed to have a man like Rolf.
