Liesl & Adam[dropcap color=”rosy”]M[/dropcap]y boyfriend – now fiance, took me to a picturesque area on the dam wall of the farm in Elgin (Western Cape). This particular location gives you a panoramic view of the Theewaterskloof Dam, and a perspective of the endless miles of blossoming apple and pear orchards with scatterings of weeping willow trees where the water meets the shore, all cradled in every direction by the beautiful and imposing Hottentots Holland mountains.
He chose the perfect spot to watch the sun set. He opened the back of the buckie where he revealed a mattress sprinkled with rose petals, a chilled bottle of my favorite champagne and a punnet of fresh strawberries we had subsequently picked in Stellenbosch together, just the day before.
I sat, nestled in his arms as we watched the sun melt below the mountain peaks and paint the sky a warm pink and orange colour. I can still remember the smell of apple blossoms permeating the evening air and silhouettes of Egyptian Geese flying across the disappearing sky. It almost seemed too perfect.
He then suggested we take a quick stroll along the dam wall. We walked arm in arm chatting, and making wishes with dandelions floating by, when suddenly, on the other side of the dam wall, an explosion stole our moment.
Alarmed I gazed into the distance and dramatically another explosion went off painting the faded sky with an electric display of lights and colours. A volley of 8 breathtaking fireworks then went off illuminating the night sky and the ripples along the dam. He knew how much I love fireworks! It was beautiful…seconds later, under the light of the fireworks 13 umbrella\’s were revealed on the opposite end of the dam … each umbrella had a letter written on it. It read ‘ WILL U MARRY ME?\’. I was mesmerised for a brief moment. When I turned to face him, he was on his knee holding the most beautiful ring.
I broke down and uncontrollably sobbed with joy. I just prayed this wasn’t a dream.
After consoling me for almost 10 minutes … it felt like an eternity, he sheepishly asked: ‘So is that a yes…you still haven\’t given me an answer?’ I said YES …. YES! YES! YES! He waved his arms to the horizon when another volley of blasts went off in celebration. We sat for a moment in each other’s embrace, under the now gentle light of a rising full moon (not kidding). He swept me off my feet and carried me back to the car in his arms.
When I inquired as to who was responsible for the fireworks and umbrella\’s, my now fiance informed me that it was my entire family. Well they sure know how to keep a secret because I had no idea.
To add to the romance, we\’d never been to try on rings before – I\’d pointed out a ring I liked on a friends finger in passing one evening. He then bought a diamond and had it designed himself….to my surprise he got it more than right.
