Wedding in the Free State

Thinking twice about the Free State…
The Free State, for many years considered as the province to drive through as quickly as possible whilst on your way to more interesting destinations, is coming into its own and becoming a popular destination. With easy accessibility from Gauteng and Durban, the Free State is a perfect country wedding destination.
Where to get married in the Free State…
Harrismith is the half way point between Gauteng, Durban and Bloemfontein. The town is set against a flat sandstone mountain called Platberg. A beautiful wedding venue called Shady Pines set in spacious gardens has a wonderful view of the Platberg.
The small town of Clarens has put the Free State on the map as it has become a trendy destination for Gautengers and others. Coffee shops and art galleries abound, as do bed and breakfast establishments and lodges. Spectacular scenery with Maluti mountain views, golden sandstone cliffs and the typical tall thin poplar trees lining the streams and rivers add to make the Eastern Free State a destination of choice. Activities on offer include horse-riding, hiking, fishing and game viewing.
Nearby the village of Rosendal is also gaining popularity. It has a stunning sandstone Dutch Reformed Church surrounded by petrified tree trunks. These ancient trees have actually turned to stone and are on view throughout the town. The quaint nearby town of Ficksburg has a very popular annual cherry festival that attracts more and more visitors every year. Fouriesburg is another village in the Eastern Free State offering gorgeous views and typical sandstone buildings. Oranje Guest Farm is a stunning wedding venue situated between Fouriesburg and Clarens amongst the beautiful mountains of the Eastern Free State, near the border with Lesotho. Clocolan is another village on the Lesotho border surrounded by sandstone koppies and rolling wheatfields. There are two wonderful wedding venues we can recommend – one is called Essence of the Highlands situated on a farm outside the town and the other one is Zuikerkop with gorgeous views over the mountains and surrounding countryside. The venues offer on site ceremonies as well as luxury accommodation for you and your guests.
Closer to Gauteng is the quaint town of Parys situated on the Vaal River and close to the Vaal Dam. This entire area is really popular with Gautengers for weekend getaways and for weddings. Have you always dreamed of being a princess in a castle – well, make your fantasy a reality at Castle Marina. This wedding venue is situated on the dam and for a day you can be the princess!
Far from being the boring, flat, ugly province, the Free State is full of little gems! For a weekend or longer, you cannot go wrong with any of these wedding venues.
